Course Requirements
To assist students in learning various English language skills and developing positive attributes, EN 011 classes include the following activities:
1. Self-study Language Lab (10 points)
Students are required to do lab activities.
2. Speaking Activities (20 points)
· Presentation Project 1: Good Deed (Individual Task) (10 points)
This activity is intended to strengthen student’s sense of social responsibility and community engagement. Each student is required to do something good for other people, the public or organizations e.g. animal shelters; picking up litter; helping old people etc. They must complete 1 task. Once the task is completed, they must record what they did; when, for whom, why, and how it made they feel. Would they do it again? Write at least 10 sentences. This task is worth 5 points. They also have to present it to the class; the presentation is worth 5 points.
Grading criteria for presentation project 1:
1. 1 written task 5 points
2. Presentation 5 points
- Language 2 points
- Content 2 points
- Creativity 1 point
· Presentation Project 2: Role-Play (Our Ideal Job) (10 points)
The teacher assigns the group of 7-10 members a role-play. Each group will set up their own scenario and conduct a role-play on their ideal job by using the grammatical structure they have learnt in this course. The role-play should demonstrate the group’s creativity and efforts, i.e. how well-organized the role-play is, how well-prepared each member is, etc. They are required to videotape the role-play, save it on a CD, and submit the CD along with the scripts in week 7.
Grading criteria for presentation project 1:
1. Creativity 3 points
2. Content 3 points
3. Language 2 points
4. Presentation 2 points
3. Reading Activities (15 points)
· Summary
After reading a passage, the teacher will assign the students to write a summary about the passages they have read. The students are assigned to write 3 summaries, each worth 5 points.
4. Writing Activities (20 points)
· Dictation (5 points)
To encourage students to be active learners and form a habit of punctuality, the teacher will give a dictation at the beginning of every class. This will encourage the students to come to class in time for the dictation and study their vocabulary. Scoring should be based on the number of dictations the students take. For example, each dictation is worth 1 point. This will be a way to keep each student’s attendance record at the same time.
· Freewriting (15 points)
The free writing activity aims at giving student practice on transferring ideas into writing. Therefore, the students are encouraged to write their ideas freely on any given topic. Throughout the semester students will write 3 pieces (5 points each).
5. Participation (10 points)
• Sharing and Asking-Answering Questions
In this activity, each time of participation, students get ONE point from asking-answering the questions or sharing their work from their teachers.
